Mother Angelica Blazed A Trail For Women In The Media

mother-angelica-w-datesWhen we talk about women who blazed a trail in the competitive and demanding field of broadcast communications, Mother Angelica should be remembered at the very top of that list.

Not only did this dynamic faith-filled woman, begin a major Catholic media network in the middle of the Bible Belt, but she did it on a wing and a prayer. Despite countless obstacles including challenges with funding, opposition from many in the Church, and her own health issues, she believed she had a mission and she pressed on. As a result, her love for God and His children led to the Eternal World Television Network (EWTN) becoming the largest religious media organization in the world. It’s a network that has impacted the lives and souls of millions of people, including my own.

The late Jessica Savitch, who worked for years as an anchorwoman and reporter for NBC, was once told by a college professor “there’s no room for broads in broadcasting.” Before Savitch lost her life in a tragic car accident, she fought her way to the top in the rough and tumble TV news world, making that professor eat his words by achieving a great deal of on-air success. But not even Savitch, or her colleagues in broadcast journalism, colleagues also struggling to make names for themselves, would ever achieve what one feisty nun accomplished. At a time in the late 70’s and early 80’s when women were still trying to find their place in prominent positions on and off the air, at local affiliate and major broadcast networks, Mother Angelica was breaking through all kinds of barriers still in place in many areas. Not only did she begin a major network and run it successfully behind the scenes, but she was a major fixture on the air as well, with her popular radio and TV shows, especially Mother Angelica Live.

Mother Angelica proved there was a lot of room for broads in all area of broadcasting especially when God wants them there. Not bad for a little Italian American girl from Canton, Ohio. I for one, but I am hardly alone in this camp, will be forever grateful for her sacrifices and her determination. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Tuscany: God’s Country

under-the-tuscan-sunThe cliché “God’s Country” isn’t normally associated with a great place to visit. But it takes on an entirely different meaning under the Tuscan sun. This truly is God’s country, because there is no other explanation for the breathtaking and awe inspiring beauty, and the way He continues to reveal himself through nature and through his saints.

st-catherineTuscany was where our WINE pilgrimage took us today; more specifically Siena and Montalcino. Siena, of course, is the home of the great doctor of the Church, St. Catherine. It’s an incredible medieval town made famous by her writings, her ministry, and her efforts to unify Italy and bring the Pope back to Rome from Avignon, France. Our pilgrims thoroughly enjoyed strolling the quaint streets and spending precious time venerating St. Catherine’s relics at the Basilica of St. Dominick, as well as walking through the church where she received the stigmata. “Caterina’s” powerful spirit is everywhere and we certainly felt her presence.

w-kelly-and-caskets

Since this is God’s country, and since His first miracle was change water into wine, it only seems fitting that we wrapped up under the Tuscan sun in the fabulous Banfi winery in Montalcino, known for its Brunello wines. As you can see from the pictures this pilgrimage is truly providing us with one after the other John 10:10 experience as the abundant life experiences just keep coming.

Tomorrow we will visit Cascia, the home of yet another amazing saint: St. Rita. Then it’s on to the final leg our WINE and Shrine pilgrimage. From God’s country to God’s city, the Eternal City of Rome.

Frozen Moments of Faith, Fellowship & Fun in Italy

cascia-2Today we said “arreverdci“ to St. Claire and St. Francis and their town of Assisi, and headed to Cascia to learn more about St. Rita. St. Rita was an Augustinian nun who experienced the stigmata. Numerous miracles are attributed to her and she is the patron saint of impossible situations as well as a patron for troubled marriages and estranged families.

walking-through-the-holy-doors-of-st-rita-s-churchAs we traveled through the Umbrian mountains, my pilgrimage co-hosts Kelly Wahlquist, Joan Lewis, and I couldn’t help but notice once again, as we have for the majority of this trip, the sound of lovely chatter taking place on the bus. It was a joyful noise and a sign of the Holy Spirit at work.

While every pilgrimage is different in terms of the itinerary, one thing remains constant; if pilgrims are open, God will show up, believers’ faith will be strengthened, and new friendships will be formed. This is a pilgrimage and not a tour after all. We’re on a journey to discover more about God and His saints. What surprises many is what they learn about each other and themselves.

I am sure for example, that sweet Julie from Ohio, never expected to share her story about how God carried her through a painful divorce. But she did. And not just once on my radio show on Monday, but also on the bus as we left Cascia and headed to Rome.

As a result, the 30 women on this journey through Italy, as well as hundreds of thousands of radio listeners, know that they’re not alone when it comes to suffering. They’ve been reminded and re-assured that there is joy in midst of the bumps, twists, and turns; as well as friends that join us as we do our best to put one foot in front of the other.

Kelly, Joan, and I have also noticed how the women are helping each other. Whether it’s extending a hand to a fellow pilgrim as we trek up yet one more hill or flight of stairs, or loaning someone a few euros so they can try the pistachio Gelato, or covering someone in prayer as they share some of their struggles, they’re there for each other.

We’re only half way through our trip, with the next stop being Rome, and already the ladies are reminding us the need to share contact information so they can be in touch long after we fly home on Sunday.

wednesday-group-photo

There has been one “frozen moment” after another; special times that are meant to be savored and drawn upon when life gets a bit crazy as it so often does. As you can see from the photos, the inspiration also comes from the incredible beauty and the lives of incredible saints, all of whom became pillars of faith through suffering and perseverance. But they never lost their joy. And along the path, they were comforted by friends and probably had a few glasses of wine and some fun along the way as well. No doubt St Claire, St. Francis, St. Benedict, St. Scholastica, and St. Rita would be proud, and are smiling down on us as we head to the Eternal City.

Financial “Health” of Abortion Industry v. “Women’s Health”

doctor-tableWhile not surprising, the Supreme Court decision striking down the Texas law that regulated the safety of abortion clinics, is devastating on many levels. Once again the lives of women, not to mention of course, the life of innocent children in the womb, are put in jeopardy because the highest court of the land agrees that basic health and safety standards are burdensome. It’s also extremely hypocritical on the part of those pro-abortion activists fighting the regulations. It’s about “health“ alright, in one sense of the word. But it’s not about the physical health of women. In the end, it’s about the financial “health” of the abortion industry. How many abortions can they perform, and how much money can they make with as little investment as possible? As pro-life leaders across the nation are saying, it’s disguised as a caring and compassionate decision when it’s really a decision based on a big dollar sign. And why wouldn’t it be when the abortion industry in the United States takes in close to a billion dollars a year or more.

“How shabby are these abortion clinics that they cannot meet the minimum standards other outpatient surgical centers are required to meet, and just how bad are these abortionists that they can’t get admitting privileges at a local hospital?”

In her statement on behalf of the National Right to Life, President Carol Tobias said we don’t have to look very far to see just how low the abortion industry will go when it comes to its bottom line.“

“As we saw with Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia, it’s clear that the lucrative abortion industry is not able or willing to police itself and allows filthy, deplorable conditions to go unchecked.”

More recently, just last week as a matter of fact, we had a case in my home state of Michigan where an abortion practitioner is facing several different charges after being suspected of performing abortions in his home or the homes of his clients. Stories like these rarely make the headlines beyond pro-life and religious media outlets. But they’re happening around us on a consistent basis. What we see and hear in the news, and from the majority of messages from our culture, however, is that it’s all about the health and safety of women. Sure, and I’m the new queen of England.

How frightening is it, as Priests for Life points out, that the Supreme Court has now become the Supreme Medical Board?

“The Supreme Court is now the Supreme Medical Board, setting its own standards for patient care in the United States. This decision is an outrageous usurpation of legislative power and it only underscores the critical importance of electing a President who will nominate — and Senators who will confirm — justices to the Supreme Court who will adjudicate, not write the law.”

I’ll be discussing this on my radio program, Catholic Connection, this week. Tune in tomorrow from 8am to 10am ET to hear from a variety of pro-life leaders and legal experts on what this means and how pro-life people should respond.

The Irony of Women’s Liberation

$

supreme-court-600x390How ironic. That’s what I thought as I watched the coverage of the U.S Supreme Court decision regarding Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt. How ironic, sad and maddening that hundreds of pro-abortion activists, mainly women, who gathered at the steps of the high court on June 27, were celebrating the news and using a particular song to express their utter glee; a song that claims women can’t be “owned” or treated like a toy or an object, when in reality, that’s exactly what the Supreme Court’s ruling cemented.

The song used to capture the moment was “You Don’t Own Me,” by Lesley Gore.

“You don’t own me. I’m not just one of your many toys …”

The song, when it was released, was promoting women’s independence and liberation. But abortion has just the opposite effect. Abortion tells women they don’t deserve more than the legal ability to take the life of their own children. It makes it much easier for a man to treat women as a play thing or the object of sexual gratification, because abortion is so readily available thanks to another infamous Supreme Court decision: Roe v. Wade.

Olympic Gold Medal Mom Celebrates Sport and Motherhood

gold_medalWhen I was growing up in the ’70s, the so-called women’s liberation movement built its message around the idea of choice. If women chose to stay home and have children, that was fine, and if they chose to be in the workforce, that was fine as well. Seeking some balance in both was also greatly promoted — or, should I say, sold — to women. But the truth of the matter was that women who chose anything but shooting for the corner office were made to feel as if they were setting a bad example for women everywhere — and taking the feminist movement backward instead of forward.

On numerous occasions during my 20 years in the secular media, I can remember very clearly being told by female news directors that it was indeed all about the job. If we dared express an interest in spending time with family, we would be relegated to night, weekend and holiday shifts — or more likely than not, quickly shown the door when our contracts came up for renewal.

The messages about so-called choice are the same today and have become, I’m afraid, more ingrained thanks to our anti-life, anti-family culture. Just take a look at the negative reaction from some on social media earlier this month surrounding Kerri Walsh Jennings, an Olympic beach volleyball star, wife and proud mom. Keep in mind that she is an Olympic gold medalist. Keep in mind that she supposedly achieved what the women’s movement claimed they were all about: having choices. Walsh Jennings has chosen to have both a career and a family. While much of the feedback was positive, there are always naysayers. And for them, none of her great athletic achievements mattered. They just couldn’t handle Walsh Jennings talking about the importance she places on balancing family and career.

#RealWomenDontQuit: Celebrate Authentic Womanhood-Not “A Day Without A Woman”

$

If you’re like me, your first impulses when reacting to the latest and even more ridiculous protest of radical feminists scheduled for this Wednesday, the so called “A Day Without A Woman,” may be to do one or all of the following:

  • Roll your eyes and throw up your hands in disgust.
  • Hurl something at the television as you watch yet one more biased news report claim all American females staunchly agree with the angry women involved in the so-called “A Day Without A Woman.”
  • Or last but not least, simply pull the covers over your head and go back to bed hoping that when you wake up Thursday morning the world will be somewhat back to normal, if that’s even remotely possible.

“A Day Without A Woman” is an event where women, or should I say, some women are planning to walk off their jobs for a variety of reasons, including to continue their protest of the election results. Since 1909, according to the United Nations website, March 8th has been set aside as International Women’s Day: a day to mark the contributions of women to society around the globe. But now apparently, according to the same group that brought us the ranting and raving of the likes of Whoopi, Madonna, and Ashley Judd, on January 21st, this is a day for more kicking, screaming, and whining mostly again about politicians whom they detest and what they see as the need for birth control and abortion on demand.

Now while all of the above reactions listed are certainly understandable, and have been undertaken by yours truly more than once, (I’ve developed a very good pitching arm when it comes to the second reaction item), there are some better ways to respond to the latest extreme lefty shenanigans. There have been some real and very positive efforts occurring by some very real and positive women who believe that their identity is not wrapped up or directly tied to abortion, birth control, or their hate for particular people in office.

These are women who don’t want to take their concerns out on their employers or their children by abandoning their responsibilities for a day. These are women who believe in the sanctity of life from conception until natural death. These are women who believe in the dignity of all people, and respect the variety of roles women serve in both the home and the world.

Here are two very constructive and dignified ways to speak up this week about true feminism and womanhood:

  • Women Speak for Themselves Gatherings: The Women Speak for Themselves ministry is the brainchild of Law Professor and Vatican Consultant, Helen Alvare. This wonderful organization has been with us for several years, and began as a response to the Health and Human Services Mandate imposed on religious institutions and Christian business owners under the Obama administration. This is a mandate that many of these entities are still fighting in the courts. The small group WSFT gatherings are designed to bring together women in a comfortable and non-threatening home setting to spread the truth about what Christ and His Church really teach and say about issues such as abortion, contraception, and marriage. The idea is to speak the truth in love, and is based on the knowledge that most people don’t really know what the Church teaches. They form their opinions and reactions most often, Lord help us, through something they’ve heard in the secular media. WSFT even provides topics, questions, and recipes. So, while others are grabbing their protest signs and taking to the streets in defiance, grab some friends and a bottle of vino and engage in fruitful discussions.
  • Lady Day: Catholic blogger Colette Zimmermann came up with this idea to use the day to honor the Blessed Mother, as well as counter the upcoming strike. In a press release she raises some great questions that too many who are drinking the March 8th Madness Kool-Aid are choosing to ignore.

“But how many women can really skip work? What about mothers? What about nurses or any woman who works in society to help others? We can’t skip work! And furthermore, we don’t want to. Lady Day is a positive response, a day for us to celebrate God’s plan for women as pure and good.”

Suggestions for “Lady Day” include dressing up fashionably but modestly, and heading out the door for tea with friends, and then sharing thoughts and pictures of your tea time experience on Facebook and Twitter.

You can also join in a “Tweet Fest” on Wednesday, March 8th, celebrating authentic femininity and real womanhood by using #RealWomenDontQuit all over social media.

If you have another idea on how to productively spend “A Day Without A Woman,” pass it on. Perhaps you’re going to take your Mom out to lunch, or visit women in a nursing home. Maybe it’s a day to volunteer at the local pregnancy resource center, or to pray outside a local abortion facility. Speaking of abortion facilities, I wonder how many women will be walking off those jobs on Wednesday?

Whatever you do to counter the very destructive messages being promoted by radical feminists this week, as St. Peter tells us in 1st Peter 3:15, “do it with gentleness and reverence,” as challenging as it may be. And remember, as St. Francis de Sales said, we catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar, and in our case maybe wine, cheese, and a good cup of hot tea.

Do Abortion Providers Really Care About Women’s Health?

$

Before I came back to the Church, I considered myself to be very reasonable about the abortion issue. I took the proverbial politically correct approach: an approach that is the only one absolutely accepted, promoted and certainly championed currently by our overly secularized world.

Pro-choice is the term I chose. It seemed to be hip and, again, “reasonable,” which is quite ridiculous because very little reasoning — or even thinking — went into the issue on my end. It was just a matter of going with the current cultural flow of things. Although I said I would never have an abortion myself, I bought into the lie that I had no right to speak out against another woman’s so-called “right to choose.” Beyond that, I didn’t spend too much time on the subject.

Very few who support abortion realize how it’s an industry that cares little about freedom, choice and, most of all, women’s health. The drumbeat of lies promoted by Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers has convinced millions for decades that abortion is a major part of “women’s health.” Without it, women would be reduced to being victimized by back-alley abortions. The trouble is, as more and more cases are showing us, the back-alley abortions never stopped. They just moved to main street after the Supreme Court decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which gave us abortion on demand through nine months of pregnancy.

The case of former abortionist Kermit Gosnell and his now-infamous Philadelphia “house of horrors” proved to be just the tip of the iceberg. Just recently, another abortion facility, this one also in Pennsylvania, finally was forced to close down because of health violations. Keep this in mind when recalling again how abortion proponents constantly shout from the rooftops how concerned they are about women’s health.

Violations included failure to provide a sanitary environment, outdated medications and supplies, improper staffing with no licensed registered nurse on location and lack of documentation regarding medical staff qualifications.

The story about Hillcrest Women’s Medical Center did get some play in the local press and a lot of coverage in conservative circles. But, as with the Gosnell story, the national media mostly have been ignoring it.

In addition to Hillcrest comes the news… Continue Reading at OSV.com

“Feminism” Is A Good Excuse To Spread The Truth

$

Feminism: A Good Excuse to Spread the Truth of the Catholic faithWe’re all called to evangelize by virtue of our baptism, but what’s the most effective way to do that? During the Advent-Christmas season, or any time for that matter, how can we evangelize without having a co-worker, or even family member, turn us into the local chapter of the ACLU? More importantly, how can we not appear so overzealous that folks don’t take our message seriously and lose interest?

Ironically, or maybe not so ironically, the craziness occurring in our culture right now, is actually handing us one opportunity after another to actually bring God into the conversation. Whether folks realize it, Church teachings, especially in the areas of the dignity of women and the overall issue of sexuality, are being re-affirmed practically daily.

One example is a feature story making headlines. It’s the annual choice of Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year. The word for 2017 happens to be “feminism,” because it was the most looked up word in their online dictionary, and generated 70 percent more searches from last year. It spiked in January after the infamous “Women’s March” on Washington, and again about a month later when Counselor to the President, KellyAnne Conway, a strong Catholic and pro-life activist, said that she had a hard time calling herself a feminist because of what the word had come to mean and to represent: only those women who supported abortion on demand, as well as other issues contrary to Catholic teaching.

Given all the discussion based on what feminism is and isn’t, and all the concern generated through the #metoo campaign, stemming from the ever- growing list of personalities accused of sexual misconduct against women, why not start a buzz about what the Catholic Church has identified as “New Feminism,” which is really true feminism at its best.

You could discuss how new feminism helps women embrace their unique qualities as well as build on those qualities. This is as opposed to forcing women into a limited category or description, and forcing them to act against their nature. You could casually toss out names such as Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta, of course) a brilliant educator, philosopher, and speaker who addressed women’s rights in Nazi Occupied Europe. She was a woman who eventually lost her life at the concentration camps because of her beliefs. And most folks, even those who don’t consider themselves religious, are familiar with and might even have a fondness for the very popular Pope St. John Paul the Second; the man who came up with the phrase in the first place.

Depending on the audience, you’re not going to exactly talk deep theology or hand out copies of Church documents at your office party. But we simply have to start getting up more courage to talk about the beautiful way the Church promotes, protects, and dignifies all of us, especially women.

Given the fact that the word “feminism” was the most looked up word this year through the Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary, it’s obvious people are searching for answers. What a gift it could be for them this Christmas if that search could help lead them to a better understanding of the true dignity of women, and ultimately the real reason for this beautiful season. Merry Christmas!

When Is Hollywood Going To Connect The Dots?

$

0

Hollywood and the media are being very vocal, at least since the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke, in their support of campaigns such as “Time’s Up” and #MeToo, which attempt to draw attention to the sexual harassment problems that have been going on in their industries for decades. The latest example was at the recent Golden Globe Awards.

A majority of those attending the Golden Globes dressed in black and donned “Time’s Up” pins to show their unity. A number of the award winners even dedicated their acceptance speeches to the issue, declaring that time is indeed up when it comes to abusers and keeping silent about that abuse.

Now all of America is supposed to be very convinced that Hollywood really cares — that they want and are demanding change. While there are certainly some involved in these efforts who are sincere in their concern, important questions need to be addressed.

For starters, are those who now claim to be so dedicated to eradicating these issues sincere enough and concerned enough to refuse roles that only add to the degradation, objectification and harassment problems? Call me cynical, but it’s very hard to take Hollywood seriously when, during the same show where the stars where pledging their allegiance to change, they also were giving recognition by way of numerous nominations and standing ovations to a film, “Call Me by Your Name,” depicting the story of a 25-year-old man having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old boy. Are they forgetting all their own horror stories, some involving teen actors and actresses?

Given the current climate and alleged sensitivity to these issues, why was this film allowed to be nominated in the first place, let alone cheered the same night Tinsel Town was issuing its anti-harassment battle cries? And how hypocritical is it to rail against an unjust system of victimization while promoting the new “Fifty Shades Freed” film? What were network executives thinking when they ran an ad for the film in a commercial break toward the end of the show, and then brought out the film’s co-star as one of the final presenters? Can anyone say “mixed messages”?

So how about a “time’s up” on the continued failure to connect the dots? How about a  “time’s up” on talking or acting out of both sides of their mouths? On the one hand saying that women and men deserve better (and they certainly do), and on the other hand refusing to acknowledge the growing piles of evidence of how pornography devalues women… Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

Shockingly, Feminists Lament Demise of Human Trafficking Site

Shockingly, Feminists Lament Demise of Human Trafficking Site, TeresaTomeo.comAt first, I thought it was a crude joke. Although I have a long laundry list of issues with the so-called women’s marches and those behind them, their latest move to supposedly show their support for better treatment of women was so out of touch, even for them, in terms of what they were supporting and the blatant and extremely harmful impact on women and girls, that again I thought it had to be some sort of a hoax.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t. On the Twitter account of the Women’s March, this organization was lamenting, yes lamenting, the demise of Backpage.com, a notorious website connected with sex trafficking and prostitution. This had occurred after federal authorities seized and shut down the classified ad site which again has been linked to, per an article in the Weekly Standard, “illicit sexual activities, including underage prostitution and trafficking.”

So the federal agents and so many others working to combat sex trafficking see this website as not only problematic but criminal to the point of shutting it down so no one else has access. But does the Women’s March even have a clue that this site is really bad news?

Not a chance, unless you think the bad news has to do with eliminating “work” or “employment” opportunities. Think I’m kidding or stretching it a bit? Here is just one of the tweets the Women’s March felt so moved to put out there for all the world to see.

“The shutting down of Backpage is an absolute crisis for sex workers who rely on the site to get in touch with clients. Sex workers rights are women’s rights.”

An absolute crisis for sex workers? Yes, you read that correctly. How in the world can the same organization that claims to be so outraged by men who mistreat women; the same movement that embraces the #MeToo and #timesup campaigns, completely fail to see that the real crisis has to do with the actual “sex workers” but for very different reasons? These same “sex workers” are treated as objects or property, don’t have any rights and are often forced into the sex industry either because they’re young runaways, or drug addicts, or abducted off the street.

Why isn’t the Women’s March celebrating the news that the move by federal law enforcement is a real victory for women, girls and society? The action exposes the evils of an industry that enslaves as opposed to empowers, which is supposedly what the Women’s March is all about. Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

Women’s Groups Actually Aiding Abusers

Women's Groups Actually Aiding Abusers - TeresaTomeo.comFirst, we had the Women’s March lamenting on Twitter how disappointed they were that the website Backpage.com had been shut down by federal authorities. Despite the fact that Backpage was considered by law enforcement to be a major facilitator for the sex-trafficking trade involving women and children, an organization supposedly all about supporting women still found the closure of the site to be a huge negative versus a major positive step in the right direction. Here’s what the Women’s March said on Twitter back in early April:

“The shutting down of Backpage is an absolute crisis for sex workers who rely on the site to safely get in touch with clients. Sex workers’ rights are women’s rights.”

As I was still trying to wrap my head around their thought process, or the lack thereof, along comes another organization, also claiming to be a champion of women’s rights, reportedly doing just the opposite of what they claim to stand for.

According to a new undercover report by the pro-life group Live Action, instead of being part of the solution in solving sexual abuse, Planned Parenthood is actually a big part of the problem. The report, “Aiding Abusers: Planned Parenthood’s Cover Up of Child Sexual Abuse,” was released at the end of May. In the introduction, Live Action explains how Planned Parenthood was allegedly saying one thing and doing another:

“While Planned Parenthood frequently attempts to establish itself as a leading advocate on this critical issue, it is actually one of the biggest accomplices to child sexual abuse in the nation.

“Time and again, rather than reporting suspected abuse to authorities, Planned Parenthood has repeatedly looked the other way, performed abortions on victims as young as 12 years old, and then returned those victims into the waiting arms of their abusers. Planned Parenthood’s repeated failure to report such incidents has allowed abusers to continue abusing their victims, often for years.”

The report goes on to say how Planned Parenthood has become anything but a haven for women needing help and advice.

“A study on the brutal sex trafficking trade published by the Loyola University Chicago’s Beazley Institute documents how traffickers often force their victims to get abortions at Planned Parenthood so they can quickly get them back on the streets.

“The report notes that victims had ‘significant contact with clinical treatment facilities, most commonly Planned Parenthood.’ In fact, Planned Parenthood was the top most-visited facility for trafficking victims, second only to hospital emergency rooms. When asked why they went to Planned Parenthood, one survivor said ‘because they didn’t ask any questions.’”

The Sexual Revolution Fails Women Again

Women's Dignity Falls Farther TeresaTomeo.com

Across our oversexualized culture, we see the continued fallout of the sexual revolution. It’s not exactly breaking news: the epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases, the breakdown of the family, and the vocal pushback against the objectification and sexual abuse of women from both the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns.

That said, what is more troubling is the ongoing failure to connect the dots. There is now even more evidence affirming the truth in Blessed Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae. That truth, however, is still being ignored by Christians and, more precisely, Christian women.

One startling example comes from Patrina Mosley of the Family Research Council. “Women and pornography” are not words we’re used to reading in the same sentence, since pornography has been considered mainly a man’s issue, but a recent report from the FRC shows that’s no longer the case:

“Unfortunately, times have changed. Today, more and more women are indulging in ‘adult’ entertainment, unaware of the devastating damage that it does to mind, body, and soul.”

As Mosley, who serves as the FRC’s director of life, culture and women’s advocacy explains, the numbers are rising across all age groups and belief systems, with Christian women showing up more frequently in the statistics.

Here are a few of the alarming findings from FRC’s “Women and Pornography” report:

  • “More than half of women 25 and under seek out porn and one-third seek it out at least monthly.”
  • “About 1 in 5 women use the internet for sexual purposes habitually — every week.”
  • “25 percent of married women say they watch porn at least once a month.”
  • “A survey of more than 11,000 college-age women revealed that more than half were exposed to sexually explicit material by the age of 14.”
  • “According to one study, 15 percent of Christian women view pornography at least once a month, which is about one-half of the national average.”

This is hardly coincidental. We’re marking the 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae this month. But despite the mounting evidence, mention of the encyclical or Church’s teachings on sexuality and the dignity of women is met, even by many in the Church, with not just rolling of eyes but fierce resistance. The sexual revolution has failed all of us, with women, as Paul VI stressed, among those who suffer the most.

I remember the first time I read Humanae Vitae. I was in my early 30s and had just returned to the Church. Having been greatly misled by the lies of radical feminism, I was open to see what the Church had to say about the issues with which I had struggled. Years later, I return to it every time I see a story about the Harvey Weinsteins of the world or alarming reports from solid pro-family organizations, such as the FRC. With the latest study in mind, one line from the encyclical stands out:

“Another effect that gives cause for alarm is that a man who grows accustomed…Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

If She Knew This She Wouldn’t Have Had the Abortion

If She Knew This She Wouldn't Have Had the Abortion, TeresaTomeo.comThere is an old saying, “what you don’t know can’t hurt you.” And yet, when it comes to the choices we make and how we live our lives every day, eventually we realize just the exact opposite is true. Even Scripture tells us that knowledge is a positive rather than a negative. The Old Testament prophet Hosea reminds us, for example, that God’s people “perish” for lack of knowledge.

The word “perish” in Hosea 4:6 can be taken literally in many ways. Firstly, since the Church exists to evangelize, what happens when Catholics haven’t been taught or don’t take the time to learn and embrace their faith? They often fall away and embrace practices that may harm and cost them their very souls.

Secondly, they can also engage in dangerous activities that can lead to serious illness, or worse. How many more reports, for example, do we need from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization to remind us of the epidemic proportions of sexually transmitted infections? How many of the warnings, however, are not shared with the average person who might believe that doing whatever they want sexually is “freeing” rather than truly dangerous in more ways than one?

Ignorance is definitely not bliss, despite what we hear in yet another old saying. This is painfully obvious in a new survey of post-abortive women. This particular survey, conducted by the website FemCatholic, posed questions pertaining to their personal experiences with abortion. It is one to share, review and reflect upon as we head into the annual March for Life, and the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.

These Supreme Court decisions gave us abortion on demand through nine months of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood, along with much of the mass media and the rest of the culture, wants us to believe that women truly “know” what they are doing when they have an abortion. We are practically hit over the head with the word or message of “choice.” Yet, more and more research shows us that women who “choose” to abort their unborn children didn’t realize they actually had a different alternative because they didn’t have or weren’t aware of information that could have changed their decision.

FemCatholic found, among other things, that women noted “a lack of practical information about the support available to young mothers.” According to a Catholic News Agency article, one respondent said that she desperately wanted but couldn’t find practical resources, information and inspiration when she was faced with an unexpected pregnancy.

“How can I finish my degree and be a parent? Where can I live? Can I continue in dorm housing? Are there other mothers out there with thriving careers who started out with an unplanned pregnancy as a single woman?” she asked. Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

Beauty Aisle Makeover

Beauty Aisle Makeover, TeresaTomeo.comSeveral years ago, when addressing the topic of culture and media influence on people of faith, Pope Benedict XVI gave us a great deal of food for thought: “Believers are conditioned by a culture of images that imposes contradictory models and impulses with the effective negation of God.”

Note that he didn’t say atheists or agnostics. He said “believers.” He was reminding us how easy it is, even for those who love God and the Church, to be affected by the media to the point where it leads us away from where we need to be.

We see this in so many of us who deal regularly with a variety of insecurities. For example, no matter how many times we tell ourselves, our daughters and friends that they are beautifully made in the image and likeness of God, our encouraging words still have to compete with the messaging from Madison Avenue and beyond.

A steady stream of studies continues to show a connection between confidence, body image and media messaging. One of these studies even showed that media images greatly impacted the body image of girls as young as 5 years old — yes, you read that correctly. The impact can lead to depression, bullying, even suicide. But so far only a handful of those responsible for flooding our culture of images with phony imitations of beauty have been willing to take their own industries to task.

That’s why it was so refreshing to learn about a new campaign from CVS Pharmacy entitled CVS Beauty Mark. Last month the nationwide company addressed the effort in Times Square (of all places), saying they will be cutting way back on using altered beauty imagery in their drug-store chain.

“We will not digitally alter or change a person’s shape, size, proportion, skin or eye color or enhance or alter lines, wrinkles or other individual characteristics.”

Their campaign statements went on to explain how the company realizes even something that seems so simple such as walking down the drug-store aisle for a lipstick or some moisturizer can really impact the way we feel about ourselves — and not in a good way.

“We want our beauty aisle to be a place where our customers can always come to feel good, while representing and celebrating the authenticity and diversity of the communities we serve,” the campaign said.

CVS explains that it’s committed to making some pretty big changes when it comes to promoting its many products related to beauty and cosmetics, including… Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

She’s 15 And Can Get An Abortion, So Why Can’t She See This Movie?

She's 13 & Can Get An Abortion, So Why Can't She See This Movie? TeresaTomeo.comThe Pure Flix Entertainment film “Unplanned,” based on the book by former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson, will be released in theatres nationwide March 29. It’s a powerful story showing how one abortion worker, after viewing an actual abortion via ultrasound, was so traumatized that she abruptly left her prominent position. Johnson eventually would become a pro-life speaker and activist, launching a ministry dedicated to helping other abortion workers leave the industry. Her journey out of Planned Parenthood also would lead her to the Catholic Church. It’s an incredible story of God’s mercy and how truth can and does have an impact if we’re open to it — a story told powerfully and delicately on screen.

While the movie, which I had the opportunity to screen, does contain some scenes that are challenging to watch, in no way did it deserve the R rating recently slapped on it by the Motion Picture Association of America. But why should anyone be surprised given Hollywood’s love fest with Planned Parenthood and the sacred cow of abortion? Those working on the film were disappointed but not shocked. They were also quick to point out the irony and the obvious hypocrisy.

“A 15-year-old can get an abortion without her parent’s permission, but she can’t see this movie without adult supervision,” said Pure Flix Entertainment’s executive vice-president, Ken Rather, in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

According to the Christian Post, the filmmakers also sent a letter of complaint to the MPAA. Good for them, because the bottom line here has to do with Hollywood not wanting to allow abortion to be seen as a negative. Another obvious hypocrisy is the MPAA’s efforts to slap a PG or PG-13 rating on movies filled with extreme violence as well as sexual content.

“We consider the MPAA’s current standards to be deeply flawed, insofar as they allowed scenes of remarkably graphic sex, violence, degradation, murder and mayhem to have a PG-13 rating, whereas our film, highlighting the grave dangers of abortion in a straightforward manner, is considered dangerous for the American people to view,” said the letter.

Teens are a big customer base for Planned Parenthood, and if the powers that be in the industry can get parents to think that their kids might be somehow traumatized by “Unplanned,” then they see that as a victory. The MPAA claims it slapped the rating on the movie because of “some disturbing bloody images.” The association added that it will retain its R rating “unless all scenes of abortions are removed or altered.” Of course. A film about the devastating impact of abortion can’t depict abortion, but violence in any other shape or form, and plenty of it, is fine for your children to see — and without your supervision.

Despite the frustrating news from the MPAA, there is a bright spot in all of this. While Hollywood might have been hoping their efforts to muzzle interest in the film was a great idea, their plan appears to be backfiring. Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

The Unplanned Changing of Hearts

The Unplanned Changing of Hearts, TeresaTomeo.com“The people that need to be in the seats just won’t show up.” This was one of the most common concerns expressed for the movie “Unplanned,” based on the life of former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life leader Abby Johnson. And given the anti-life climate in our culture, who could blame anyone for making these comments? And then there were all of the roadblocks that were placed in the movie’s path, including an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, the rejection of ads by major networks, and what amounted to a near-complete blackout by a vast majority of the secular news media.

Pro-life workers did show up in droves to theaters late last month. However, in addition to those whom we expected to support the film, helping it bring in more than $6 million in ticket sales that crucial first weekend — double the expected initial revenue — there were some new members of the so-called choir along with some powerful evidence showing how those new members, once staunch supporters of legalized abortion, have changed or are at least thinking about changing their tune.

One example of this was an opinion piece by a newspaper writer, Bridget Bayley from the Central Florida Post, who described herself as strongly pro-choice — at least that’s how she felt before seeing “Unplanned.” Now she’s not so sure.

“I was moved to tears several times during the film and actually appreciated the way that the workers of Planned Parenthood were portrayed. The women in the clinic were made to seem like they really did believe what they were doing was morally right and that they were helping the ‘patients.’ This was important to me because I knew there were members of the audience who have never seen the inside of a Planned Parenthood facility.

“By the end of the film, I was completely distraught, questioning everything I had ever believed about what abortion really was. I was hungry for more information; I went to Google; I talked with friends; and I prayed,” Bayley wrote. “This is not my story of how a movie made me change my political affiliation, and I still have many more questions about the validity of what I saw, but I went into that theater thinking there was NOTHING that could go onto that screen that would make me question myself, and I was wrong. What I saw DID make me question myself and my beliefs, and I believe that EVERYONE should go and test themselves as I did.”

Then there were some surprising thoughts expressed in the comments of other secular outlets, including this stunning revelation posted in response to a Variety article on the film. This woman had a complete turnaround on her once staunch pro-abortion views…Continue Reading at OSV Newsweekly.

“Feminism” Is A Good Excuse To Spread The Truth

We’re all called to evangelize by virtue of our baptism, but what’s the most effective way to do that?

$
0

On the one hand saying that women and men deserve better (and they certainly do), and on the other hand refusing to acknowledge the growing piles of evidence of how pornography devalues women, as Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver pointed out in a recent column, citing researchers of a recent study:  “They discovered that over time, many male porn users became more callous toward women, and less likely to value monogamy and marriage.

I’m not exactly holding my breath in anticipation for the clouds to part and for Hollywood and the media elites to suddenly wake up, smell their fancy cappuccinos and give the Church credit for its prophetic warnings and rock-solid teachings as to what happens when we fail to recognize the dignity of the human person. If they are truly committed and not just putting on another performance, they at least might be willing to take a look at some of the overwhelming evidence. Unfortunately, if they fail to do so, it will simply be another reminder that all that glitters, including all that was expressed at the recent awards show, is certainly far from gold. It just might be darker than the deepest black gown worn that night to bring attention to a problem that’s grown to near epidemic proportions.
